Quick update for today: access to travel can now be locked and unlocked by a console. I need to celebrate this after it gave me so much trouble. Probably should have just created a new type of travel effect instead of wedging in locking/unlocking into the existing one, but it seemed reasonable at the time :)
Laz and the Knave are standing in for the real characters (Baraquel and friend). And a rusty can is doing its best impression of an ancient console. A couple more details to work out and test then I can get down to creating some fun new assets for this level.
